Following the Carbon

How petroleum coke becomes activated carbon and a flocculant at one plant, and where those products go to work across an oil sands site, ending at the last step before the river. Press Start here for a short introduction, then open a chapter from the map. Each chapter can be watched with narration or stepped through at your own pace, and brings you back to the map when it ends.

Illustrated bird's-eye view of an oil sands site: a mine, upgrader and petroleum coke piles feed a central activated carbon plant, with carbon routes to an end pit lake, water-treatment basins, pond shorelines, constructed wetlands that cascade to the river, a new pond being lined, an old pond being capped and a boreal forest being replanted. A small salt-removal building has been added between the last wetland and the river.
